HELENA, Mont. – On Monday, Dec. 12, the City of Helena began accepting applications for City Manager. The City Commission recently approved an application and recruitment process, which is being led by Communication and Management Services, LLC (CMS). Application review will begin on Jan. 23, 2023, with a goal to fill the position by April.
Since April of 2022, Helena has been under the direction of an Interim City Manager. This position provides organizational leadership for department directors and employees and oversees the day-to-day business of government operations.
Prior to accepting applications, the City Commission worked with CMS to complete a review of the two most recent recruitment and hiring processes of its City Managers. Following the review, CMS presented the Commision with a report, which includes recommendations for future City Manager hiring efforts. It was presented at the Oct. 17 Commission Meeting.

Provided qualified applications are received by Jan. 23, a special Commission meeting will be scheduled for the purposes of initial screening. Meetings of the Helena City Commission are generally open to the public. However, meetings to screen the candidates may be closed pursuant to Sect. 2-3-203(3), MCA, if the Mayor determines the discussion relates to a matter of individual privacy and the demands of individual privacy clearly exceed the merits of public disclosure.
