HELENA, Mont. – On Monday, July 24, the City of Helena hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for the completion of a new sustainability project. The event celebrated the installation of solar panels at the City’s Transportation shop and offices located at 3001 E. Lyndale Ave. The 50kW AC ground mounted solar panels have been operational since May 12, with the full construction projected wrapping up at the end of June.

The project was made possible, in part, thanks to a $50,000 Universal System Benefits grant from NorthWestern Energy. The total cost of the project was $140,000. The City also hopes to recover around 30% of the project cost through a rebate from the Inflation Reduction Act.

To date, the project has produced approximately $2,800 worth of electricity. The panels are expected to produce between $7,000 to $8,000 worth of electricity annually, which would be enough electricity to cover one-third of the electric use for the Transportation shop.
